Spotlighting Future Audiologists: Phonak University 2026 Unveils Career Skills
With an engaging Hollywood-inspired theme, “Lights, Camera, Audiology!”, Phonak University 2026 opened its doors to a select group of aspiring audiologists at the Advanced Bionics headquarters in Valencia, California. This event, which took place from February 18-20, brought together 50 third- and fourth-year audiology students from 18 different universities across the U.S. and Puerto Rico to enhance their professional development and deepen their understanding of audiology concepts.
Emphasizing Hands-On Learning
Unlike traditional academic environments, Phonak University fosters a hands-on approach, vital for future practitioners preparing for real-world audiology practices. Brandy Pouliot, director of audiology and education at Sonova, explained that students are at a critical point in their education, eager for deeper insights. This year’s program dove into advanced topics, including cochlear implant technology and personalized hearing aid fittings.
A Unique Collaboration for Wider Exposure
For the first time, Phonak partnered with Advanced Bionics to merge expertise in hearing aids and cochlear implants. Students toured Advanced Bionics’ manufacturing facility, gaining invaluable insights into how cochlear implants are developed. Madison Lyde, a student from the University of North Texas, expressed the importance of understanding what patients receive: “It’s crucial to know what our patients are going to have for the rest of their lives.”
Advanced Techniques to Enhance Skills
The event featured various hands-on labs, including one where students practiced inserting cochlear implant electrodes into models. Rebecca Hammond, another participant, highlighted the excitement of engaging with advanced techniques, while other students echoed sentiments about the importance of practical experience beyond typical classroom lectures. “We get to practice in a way that enhances our learning,” Logann Griffith from the University of Southern Mississippi added.
Connecting with Industry Experts
Phonak University 2026 brought together not just students, but a network of professionals in the audiology field. A diverse panel of Phonak trainers, audiology specialists, and HR experts shared critical insights on professional skills needed in today’s audiology landscape. Such mentorship is essential for students who will soon transition into externships and job roles.
The Future of Audiology Education
As the demand for specialists in hearing loss treatment and within the audiology sector continues to grow, educational events like Phonak University play a pivotal role in training capable professionals. This collaboration not only bridges the gap between classroom learning and practical application but also equips future audiologists with the necessary tools to thrive in their careers.
By honing the necessary skills and collaborating with industry experts, students at Phonak University 2026 leave better prepared to make meaningful contributions to audiology services and to provide patients with advanced hearing devices that address their specific needs.
